Bartending is not necessarily a skill to learn for a job. Becoming a master of your bar will allow you to serve your guests better, whether it is a bar in a restaurant, a club, or at home. Here are some bartending techniques you can learn to make your recipes interesting.

Shaking

When you have syrups, fruit juices, or any type of mixers, shaking can be a necessary routine. Three-part cobbler shakers or two-piece Boston shakers are just fine for all types of environments. You must have cold and hard ice while shaking. Also, learn to seal the shakers well before shaking for at least 10-12 seconds.

Stirring

Stirring

Shaking is not always the best idea to mix cocktails. Stirring is used for spirits as it requires a gentle mix that does not break any ice shards. Use a long handlebar spoon, lots of ice, and stir for 20-30 seconds for a smooth velvet texture.

Throwing

Throwing is another basic bartending technique that you should learn. You gently pour all the ingredients in one shaker and ice in another. Use a hawthorn strainer to seal the shakers and pour the drink from one shaker to another until you receive a perfect cooled-off cocktail.

Muddling

Muddling

Muddling is a technique of mashing down the ingredients for a fine texture but not overdo it to make a pulped mess. Use a long muddler to break down the ingredients and let the drink absorb the flavors. Use a shaker for this to avoid breaking glass.

Spanking

Spanking is an easy technique to learn that will add charm to your bartending skills without much effort. Use a basil or mint leaf and place it on your palm. Spank the leaf with your other hand. Usually, you will hear a pop sound when you do it. It allows the oils in the leaf to flow out and make it a fragrant garnish.

Double straining

Double straining

After muddling, if you do not want to serve the ingredients, you will need to use double straining to ensure that you serve a clean drink. You will need the hawthorn or julep strainer for the first straining. Then use a handheld strainer for the second strain.

Dry shaking

If you are making a flip or any drink that uses eggs or cream, you will need a dry shaking technique to make a properly emulsified drink. Add all the cocktail ingredients into a shaker and shake for 20-30 seconds. Next, fill up the shaker with some cold ice and shake again.

Sweetening

SweeteningUsually, sugar syrups do the thing when you want to sweeten the drink. You can also make flavored syrups by adding different fruits, spices, and ingredients into a heating sugar syrup pan. Make sure to give enough time for the ingredients to infuse with the syrup.
